Daejeon City and 7 Local Lawmakers Unite to Make All-Out Effort at National Assembly to Attract Defense Materials, Parts, and Equipment (MPE) Specialized Complex

Daejeon City and local political circles have joined hands to embark on full-scale efforts to attract a specialized complex for defense industry materials, parts, and equipment (MPE).

On the 25th, a forum titled "Daejeon, a City of Advanced Defense Industry: A Leap Forward for the Sustainable Growth of K-Defense" was held at the National Assembly. Seven lawmakers from the Daejeon region, including Democratic Party of Korea Representative Jang Cheol-min (Daejeon Dong-gu), along with representatives from Daejeon Metropolitan City and local defense industry, academia, and research institutions, joined forces.

This event was organized to align with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's push to designate a new MPE specialized complex, to assess Daejeon's defense R&D capabilities, and to explore strategies for creating a defense ecosystem that spans from R&D to demonstration, testing and certification, mass production, and export. The forum was jointly organized by Assemblyman Jang Cheol-min, Daejeon City, Daejeon Technopark, the Daejeon Science & Industry Promotion Agency, and the Daejeon Defense Industry Cooperative, and co-hosted by Assemblymen Park Beom-gye, Cho Seung-rae, Jang Jong-tae, Park Yong-gap, Park Jeong-hyeon, and Hwang Jeong-ah; approximately 100 experts from defense-related organizations and companies attended.

In his opening remarks, Assemblyman Jang Cheol-min emphasized that all National Assembly members representing the Daejeon region have united their efforts for regional development, stating, "I hope this forum serves as an opportunity for the political sphere and citizens to become one and lead Daejeon's great leap forward."

He added, "I will cooperate closely with local governments and regional companies to ensure that Daejeon establishes itself as a national growth engine, including through the creation of the Ansan Specialized Industrial Complex."

According to presentation materials released on the day, Daejeon ranks first nationwide in both the amount of R&D investment in the defense sector and the number of projects executed. The number of companies affiliated with the Daejeon Defense Venture Center (145) is also the highest in the nation, and the number of local companies selected for the 'Defense Innovation 100' stands at 26, ranking second nationwide.

The concentration of defense companies alongside research and educational institutions, such as the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and KAIST, is also cited as a strength.

Kang Young-ju, a Senior Research Fellow at the Daejeon Institute who delivered the presentation, identified connecting Daejeon's excellent R&D infrastructure to actual industrial achievements as a key task and proposed a plan to link the Defense AX Cluster with the Materials, Parts, and Equipment (Sobujang) Specialized Complex.

In the subsequent comprehensive discussion, chaired by Jung Jae-won, Director of the KAIST Eulji Research Institute, multifaceted discussions were held regarding the localization of core components such as defense semiconductors, the establishment of supply chains between system integrators and SMEs, and the expansion of demonstration infrastructure. Representative Jang stated, "Attracting the Daejeon Defense Materials, Parts, and Equipment Specialized Complex is a national task aimed at increasing the self-reliance of core defense components and strengthening the K-defense supply chain," adding, "I will spare no policy support to ensure that Daejeon's R&D capabilities lead to a one-stop process from mass production to export."
