Daejeon City to Leap Forward as a Core Hub for 4 High-Tech Industries, the Growth Engine of the Central Region under the Government’s ‘5 Special Zones, 3 Special Zones’
Daejeon Metropolitan City is emerging as a mecca leading R&D and technological innovation in high-tech industries in the central region, aligning with the government’s strategy for balanced regional development.
Daejeon City announced that it will actively pursue the establishment of a regional high-tech industrial ecosystem centered on the four sectors designated as industries for fostering the central region, in accordance with the ‘Plan to Foster Growth Engines Linked to 5 Special Zones and 3 Special Zones’ announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy at the Central-Local Cooperation Meeting at the Blue House on the 26th.
The government’s plan is a strategy to strengthen national industrial competitiveness through super-regional linkages. Four core sectors were finally confirmed as the growth engines for the central region: next-generation displays and semiconductors, high-value-added biopharmaceuticals and materials, advanced batteries, and future defense and transportation systems. Daejeon City plans to lead economic growth in the central region by combining the region's unrivaled scientific and technological capabilities with cooperation with neighboring municipalities.
According to the implementation plans for each sector, the next-generation display and semiconductor sector will establish a Chungcheong Mega-cluster centered on semiconductor packaging and special-purpose semiconductors, leveraging research and manufacturing infrastructure such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the National Nanotechnology Center.
For high-value-added biopharmaceuticals and materials, the city will maximize synergies for new drug development and the Bio Belt by linking local companies with existing bio research infrastructure, such as global innovation special zones.
In the advanced battery sector, the plan is to complete a full-cycle supply chain extending from R&D to demonstration by integrating source technologies from the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) and the Korea Energy Research Institute (KERI) with nearby battery manufacturing hubs.
For future defense and transportation systems, the city will create a K-Defense Innovation Cluster by utilizing the strengths of the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to accelerate the development of next-generation mobility industries, including drones, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and robots. Daejeon City plans to strengthen corporate investment attraction and provide practical support to local businesses by linking the Mega Special Zone system with the seven major policy support packages provided by the government, including finance, deregulation, taxation, and workforce.
