Daejeon City Joins Hands with Labor Unions of 7 Public Institutions to Attract 'Second Wave of Relocation'

Daejeon Metropolitan City has joined hands with labor unions from seven public institutions located in the Seoul metropolitan area to establish an all-out cooperation system for attracting the second wave of public institutions to Daejeon.

On the 2nd, Daejeon City held a meeting at the City Hall conference room with representatives from the labor unions of the seven public institutions hoping to relocate to Daejeon. During the meeting, they shared attraction strategies and discussed cooperation measures for a joint response to the government.

The meeting was attended by 14 people, including Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong, local political figures such as members of the Daejeon City Council and regional National Assembly members, and labor union officials from five specialized research management agencies (Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Promotion, Korea Institute of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Technology, Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute, and Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion), the Korea Press Foundation, and the National Green Technology Research Institute. The participants agreed that relocating institutions to Daejeon, where Korea's science and technology ecosystem—including the Daedeok Special Research and Development Zone and KAIST—is concentrated, goes beyond a mere regional transfer and leads to the enhancement of national R&D competitiveness.

In particular, they anticipate that the concentration of five specialized research management agencies, comprising approximately 2,000 personnel, will complete a virtuous cycle extending from R&D planning to evaluation and technology commercialization.

On this day, representatives of public institution labor unions delivered a petition to the Daejeon City government urging the relocation and decided to actively express their intention to attract the institutions to government policies through close cooperation with the city and local political circles.

The Daejeon City government plans to maximize its competitiveness in attracting institutions by continuing communication with prospective relocating agencies through the "2nd Public Institution Relocation Response Task Force" it has been operating, and by identifying customized cooperation models that link local research capabilities with institutional functions. Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong emphasized, “Daejeon has not received any substantial benefits from the relocation of public institutions for the past five years since being designated as an Innovation City,” adding, “I will join forces with labor unions hoping for relocation and local political circles to speak with one voice and ensure the successful attraction of public institutions to Daejeon.”
