Daejeon City Opens Era of 5 Trillion Won in State Funding by 2027, 'Long-standing Projects Included'
Daejeon Metropolitan City's government budget proposal for 2027 has been finalized at a total of 5.1043 trillion won, an increase of 303.7 billion won (6.3%) compared to this year. Despite fierce competition to secure state funding, the city has ushered in the "era of 5 trillion won in state funding" by broadly securing budgets for key projects, including future industries, transportation infrastructure, and medical and welfare services.
This budget proposal includes numerous long-standing projects that are the region's priority. The Daejeon Medical Center, to be built in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, will begin full-scale implementation with 7 billion won allocated for construction costs. Additionally, 1.9 billion won has been allocated for the Oesam-Yuseong Terminal BRT connecting road project, which had struggled to secure state funding for two years, accelerating the resolution of traffic bottlenecks.
A significant budget has also been secured for improving transportation and residential infrastructure. 204.3 billion won has been allocated for the construction of the Urban Railway Line 2 tram, and the government proposal also reflects the opening of a road connecting Jeongnim-dong in Seo-gu and Sajung-dong in Jung-gu (9 billion won) and the Urban Regeneration New Village project (10.7 billion won).
In the new growth engine sector, 10 billion won will be invested in the National Research Laboratory (NRL) 2.0 project conducted by Chungnam National University, and 16 billion won will be allocated to the Startup City creation project to support the growth of startups in the Daejeon region. Along with this, welfare budgets aimed at stabilizing citizens' lives, such as livelihood allowances (352.3 billion won) and basic pensions (569.3 billion won), have been allocated without any setbacks.
Daejeon City plans to launch a campaign at the National Assembly starting in November to make all-out efforts to secure additional funding for projects that were withheld or not reflected in the government proposal, such as the architectural design fees (700 million won) for the Daejeon Regional Office of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, which is scheduled to launch this coming October.
